New pilot
fatigue rules are on the way. Today, ALPA
welcomed the FAA’s announcement that it
would release final regulations regarding
airline pilot flight- and duty-time
limitations and minimum rest requirements.
The rules will be effective two years after
publication in the federal register; this is
expected to occur by the end of the year.
This has
been a long time coming. For decades, ALPA
has fought for rules that are based upon
modern science, apply equally to all types
of airline operations, and enable airlines
to establish fatigue risk management
systems. Among its most recent actions to
combat pilot fatigue, ALPA co-chaired the
FAA’s Aviation Rulemaking Committee. This
committee, which included a Mesa pilot, made
recommendations to the government to advance
safety regulations. It’s clear that our
voices were heard.
Below are
links to several resources, as well as the
final rules.
Currently,
we are evaluating the final rules and how
they will affect our flying. Members of your
MEC and Scheduling Committee received a
briefing from our National officers today
via teleconference. Several questions were
raised during that meeting, and there will
likely be many more that arise from our
review process. We also understand that you
will have questions. We will work to address
these items and continue to update you as
the situation evolves.
