In this issue:

"Let us not forget our 374 brothers and sisters who are still on furlough."

Message from MEC Chairman Marcin Kolodziejczyk

This is your MEC chairman, Marcin Kolodziejczyk, with an update for Dec. 16, 2011.

Right now, your MEC is focused on wrapping up business for the year and planning for 2012. We met via teleconference yesterday to discuss a number of items, administrative and otherwise. Of note, we are significantly under budget for the year. Such fiscal responsibility is a credit to this MEC and its committees. Your ALPA volunteers have done a phenomenal job working to protect your careers and your contractual rights, negotiate improvements to our contract, promote the highest level of safety at our airline and elsewhere, address any issues that pop up, keep you informed every step of the way, and much, much more. And, despite the holiday season now upon us, the work hasn’t slowed a bit. If you see one of your ALPA volunteers on the line, please thank them for their dedicated service to this union. We are always looking for more help, so let us know if you would like to get involved.

Also this week was ALPA’s fee-for-departure carrier teleconference. This is a forum where we collaborate on issues affecting our industry. Participants received updates from various MECs on what is happening at their airlines. EGL, for example, provided a general overview of the challenges they are facing in bankruptcy. Given our own recent exit from bankruptcy, we are continuing to support the EGL MEC and provide them with information about our experiences while going through this process. ALPA President Capt. Lee Moak was also on the call and provided an update on issues affecting pilots on a global scale.

Despite the recent AMR bankruptcy filing, now is a good time to be a professional airline pilot. Just look at the number of mainline, cargo, and regional carriers that are currently hiring or have aggressive hiring programs beginning in January. We have worked diligently over the past couple of years to provide our furloughed pilots with information on career options, airline hiring events, and so forth.  We are pleased that some of our furloughs will soon have an opportunity to return to Mesa. We also encourage you to check out FltOps.com and other resources to stay informed about your career. These excellent websites provide information on pilot recruiting events, hiring projections, contract comparisons, fleet projections, upgrade timetables, and so forth.

That’s it for this week. Happy holidays!
